House vote to oust McCarthy could mean 'weeks' of chaos and higher odds of shutdown

The first time a congressional revolt has successfully removed a House speaker in American history was when a small group of far-right Republicans responded to last weekend's shutdown agreement by toppling House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who led the effort and supported the resolution with a yes vote, was assisted by seven other Republicans and 210 House Democrats to bring an eventful day on Capitol Hill to a close.
